As Teacher Appreciation Week comes to a close, we want to spotlight two of MOT’s incredible teaching artists, Mary Martin and Indigo Colbert!
Both are headed into their third summers as leaders of MOT’s Operetta Remix program, and we can’t wait to see the great things in store for their students this July. To Mary and Indigo, along with the many other teaching artists, classroom teachers, and youth mentors who work with MOT, thank you for all you do to bring the arts to young people!

Mary Martin is excited to return to Michigan Opera Theater to direct Operetta Remix for her third summer! A native of Plymouth, Michigan, Mary is currently a doctoral student of voice at Indiana University, where she studies with Carol Vaness. Credits at IU include the Governess (Turn of the Screw), Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Hanne (Haydn’s The Seasons). She has been an Associate Instructor for three years, and the recipient of the Sarah Joan Tuccelli-Gilbert Memorial Fellowship. This December, Mary will be returning to South Bend Lyric Opera to make her role debut as Bea in Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers. Mary has also performed with Central City Opera Company, the Janiec Opera Company, Arbor Opera Theater as Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann), New York Opera Exchange, Opera MODO as Nannetta (Falstaff) and Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), and concert work with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Midland Symphony Orchestra, and Livingston Symphony Orchestra. Mary earned her BM and MM degrees from the University of Michigan, where she had the honor of singing the Star-Spangled Banner for President Obama in the Michigan Football Stadium.
Mary currently maintains an active voice studio. Her students primarily focus on musical theater and classical repertoire and join her in the belief that storytelling and healthy technique are the cornerstones to excellent singing! You can find her on most days hanging out with her rescue dog Andy. Find out more at www.marymartinsings.com and on Instagram @marymartinsings.
