American baritone Robert Mellon has been praised for his “glorious voice that burst[s] out brimming with life and vigor,” and for having “immense skill as an actor.”
During the 2024–25 season, Robert made house and role debuts with Indianapolis Opera as Doctor Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Anchorage Opera as Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. He returned to Opera Tampa and the role of Malatesta in their production of Don Pasquale, and reprised the role of Tonio in Pagliacci with Vero Beach Opera. In the spring, he returned to Opera Theatre of Saint Louis for two role debuts—Frank in Die Fledermaus and Quince in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A return to the title role of Verdi’s Falstaff with Geneva Light Opera capped the season.
In the 2023–24 season, Robert debuted George (Of Mice and Men) in a return to Livermore Valley Opera and made house debuts with Winter Opera St. Louis as Leporello (Don Giovanni), Detroit Opera as Terry (Breaking the Waves), and Florida Grand Opera as Tonio. Robert also made a return to Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as the Cardinal 2/Servant/Oracle 2/Inquisitor 2 in Philip Glass’s Galileo Galilei.
In previous seasons, Robert performed with San Diego Opera as Schaunard (La bohème), Opera Las Vegas as Malatesta, Union Avenue Opera as Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), and Syracuse Opera as Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte) and Leporello. He sang in the world premiere of Dear Erich with New York City Opera and performed as Willem/Usher/Clerk/Priest in the American premiere of Glass’s The Trial with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. In a double bill with Livermore Valley Opera, he sang the title role of Gianni Schicchi and delivered a performance of Simone (Eine florentinische Tragödie) that won the company the American Prize for opera.
Concert work includes the Mozart and Duruflé Requiems, Dvořák’s Te Deum, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle, Bach’s Magnificat, and Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death. In a concert performance of La Belle et la Bête with Present Music, he sang the roles of Le Père/Ludovic/L’Usurier.
