Roland Wood, Tevye
Roland Wood studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and then the National Opera Studio. He made his debut with Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2000 as Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress). He was a s emi f inal ist at the 2003 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World c ompetition, representing England. He has sung major roles at all of the major U. K. companies: Ford (Falstaff) and Roucher (Andrea Ch é nier) at Royal Opera; Scarpia (Tosca), Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Paolo (Simon Boccanegra), Bunyan/Pilgrim (The Pilgrim’s Progress), Marcello (La bohème), Zurga (The Pearl Fishers), and Papageno (The Magic Flute) at E nglish N ational O pera; Michele and Gianni Schicchi (Il trittico), the title role of Falstaff, the title role of Don Giovanni, Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande), the title role of Marx in London, Scarpia, and Count di Luna (Il trovatore) at Scottish Opera; the title role of Simon Boccanegra and Giorgio Germont at Opera North; Michele and Gianni Schicchi, Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Nottingham (Roberto Devereux), and Giorgio Germont at W elsh N ational O pera; and Scarpia and Renato at Grange Park Opera.
In North America, he sang the title role of Nabucco, the title role of Rigoletto, Scarpia, and Gianni Schicchi at the Canadian Opera Company; the title role of Macbeth at O pera T heatre of S aint L ouis; Rigoletto at Detroit Opera; and Ford and Giorgio Germont at Santa Fe Opera. In Germany, at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, he has sung Scarpia and Rigoletto. With the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and Karina Canellakis, he sang Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen) and Šiškov (From the House of the Dead) at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Under Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, he sang Onegin (Eugene Onegin), Golaud, Forester, and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with the C ity of B irmingham S ymphony O rchestra. He also sang the Mahler with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen. O ther notable concert highlights include Mahler s ongs with T he Hallé and Sir Mark Elder. His recordings include The Dream of Gerontius and Caractacus for Hyperion, Tippett’s New Year for the BBC and NMC Record ing s, and opera s for Chandos and Opera Rara.
His 2025 appearances included Forester at Des Moines Metro Opera and Marcello at Scottish Opera. In 2026 he makes his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, with the title role of Macbeth and Stárek (Jenůfa). Future plans include Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) at Opera North, Méphistophélès (Faust) at Malmö Opera, and Iago (Otello) at Finnish National Opera.
