Invite our experienced teaching artists to bring a performance to your school or community. Performances last 30-60 minutes and include educational resources before and after the performance. Our touring productions are designed for preschool to 5th grade students. We will be on tour March-June 2026!

Storybook Opera
For Pre-K through Grade 2
This spring, Detroit Opera’s Education Department will present two operas in its Storybook Opera touring season: The Fairy Queen, composed by Henry Purcell, and Jack and the Beanstalk composed by Arthur Sullivan and John Davies. Illustrations will be created by Detroit-based artists Carole Morisseau and Vito Valdez. Storybook Opera shares these operas in a truncated form designed for pre-K through 2nd grade audiences.
During a Storybook Opera session, we introduce the story, perform songs, practice vocal exploration, and early literacy comprehension skills. Advised by Dr. Shannan Hibbard, Assistant Professor of Vocal Music Education at Wayne State University, and instructed by experienced DO teaching artists, this program encourages early literacy comprehension infused with the creativity of song and dance.

The Three Little Pigs
For Grades 2 through 5
Detroit Opera’s George Shirley Youth Opera Series presents The Three Little Pigs by John Davies. This classic children’s story comes to life through the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as three little pigs must figure out how to build their own house as grown-ups do. While Cherubino Pig and Don Giovanni pig just want to play and have fun, Despina Pig goes to the library and learns how to build a strong house to protect her family. Children and adults will be drawn to this colorful and engaging performance.
