Storybook Opera
For Pre-K through Grade 2
Detroit Opera’s Education Department will present two operas in the Storybook Opera touring season:
– The Fairy Queen, composed by Henry Purcell, with illustrations by Vito Valdez
– Jack and the Beanstalk composed by Arthur Sullivan and John Davies with illustrations by Carole Morisseau.
During a 30-minute Storybook Opera session, students warm up their voices, practice their role in the opera, and participate in an interactive telling of the story. Focused on developing vocal exploration and early literacy comprehension skills, Storybook Opera is built specifically for preschool-2nd grade audiences. Advised by Dr. Shannan Hibbard, Assistant Professor of Vocal Music Education at Wayne State University, and instructed by experienced DO teaching artists, this program encourages early literacy comprehension infused with the creativity of song and dance.
Performances available: March-June 2027 Scheduling begins: November 2026
