In The Community - Detroit Opera

Throughout the year, the Detroit Opera presents programs in parks, schools, hospitals, libraries, museums, and elsewhere in the Detroit metro community—many of them free of charge.

The Detroit Opera Touring Ensemble

The singers of the Detroit Opera Touring Ensemble perform regularly for patients and staff at Henry Ford Cancer Center, as well as a summer series of 7pm concerts in city parks. Summer 2023 dates include performances at the Opera in The Parks Series (a collaboration with the City of Detroit) on July 14 (Gordon Park), July 28 (Balduck Park), August 11 (Comstock Park), August 25 (Farwell Park), and September 8 (Spirit Plaza). On July 22 at 7pm, the Touring Ensemble will also perform on the Fountain Stage on closing night of the Ann Arbor Art Fair, a three-day juried art fair that draws close to half a million attendees over three days in July. On July 27 at 7:30pm, Touring Ensemble members will perform on the back lawn of The War Memorial, overlooking Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Farms. During the school year, Touring Ensemble singers present a one-act opera, musical revue, or concert for in-school performances. The featured opera in the 2022–23 school year was Seymour Barab’s Little Red Riding Hood, an operatic take on the classic fairy tale.

Detroit Opera partners with the City of Detroit for the perfect relaxing summer evening! Join the singers of the Detroit Opera Touring Ensemble for a series of free concerts in Detroit's lovely parks! Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy food trucks, photo booths and vendors.

Please note: no outside food, beverages or coolers will be allowed.

Detroit Opera’s Tuesday evening Dance Film Series connects dance-lovers from all over Detroit for dance films, snacks, drinks and discussion. Films are screened at the Detroit Opera House in the Ford Center for Arts and Learning.

Educational Programs

Educational programs include Storybook Opera, in which Detroit Opera’s teaching artists introduce kindergarteners and first-graders to the stories, dancing, voice exploration, and music from operas. The program encourages early literacy comprehension infused with song and dance. Summer 2023 performances include daytime performances on July 21 of a shortened version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, in partnership with NW Goldberg Cares’ “Music In the Parks” series at Spotlight Park.

Other Ways to Get Involved

Other community offerings include Opera Clubs, one-hour private performances within your community, neighborhood, or network; Opera Teens, which connects area teenagers who share a common interest in opera; and Ambassadors, a subset of Detroit Opera Volunteers who wish to introduce friends and family to an opera for the first time to support Detroit Opera’s mission to share opera more broadly in our region and state.
