Helene Schneiderman, Yente

The American mezzo-soprano Helene Schneiderman was born in Flemington, New Jersey, and began her studies at Westminster Choir College, Princeton. She completed a Master of Music degree in v oice p erformance at the University of Cincinnati College -Conservatory of Music and went on to gain an Artist Diploma in o pera in 1981. After graduating, Helene moved to Germany, where, in 1982, she joined the Heidelberg Opera Ensemble and, from 1984 to 2022, was a member of the Staatstheater Stuttgart. In November 2022, Helene was made an honorary member of Staatstheater Stuttgart in recognition of her years as part of the company. In addition to her work in Stuttgart, Helene has been a guest perform er with many major European and American o pera c ompanies, including those in Munich, Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Orlando, and New York (New York City Opera). S he appeared regularly at the Heidelberg Schlossfest spiele f rom 1982 to 1987, and performed at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in 1990.

Helene ’s roles in Stuttgart included Penelope (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria), Isabella (L’Italiana in Algeri), and the title roles in La Cenerentola and Carmen. Notable engagements include Annina (Der Rosenkavalier) for the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real, Bayerische Staatsoper on tour to Carnegie Hall, and the Glyndebourne Festival; Ottavia (L ’ incoronazione di Poppea) for the Komische Oper Berlin; Bradamante (Alcina) for San Francisco Opera; the Old Lady (Candide) at Santa Fe Opera; Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro) for the Salzburger Festspiele, Canadian Opera Company, and Teatro Real; La Duchesse (Les b rigands) and Susie (A Quiet Place) for Op é ra n ational de Paris; t he Old Lady for Santa Fe Opera and Theater an der Wien; Madame Larina (Eugene Onegin) for Teatro Massimo di Palermo and the Wiener Staatsoper; the Old Baroness (Vanessa) at Santa Fe Opera and the Spoleto Festival (Italy); and Pelageya Podtotshina (The Nose) for Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

In 1998, Helene was given the prestigious title of Kammersängerin from the City of Stuttgart. At the time, she was the youngest singer ever to have been so honored.
