Lawson Anderson, Angelotti

Bass-baritone Lawson Anderson has rapidly emerged as one of the most compelling artists of his generation, praised for his “powerful, darkly hued voice” and “nobility of phrasing and carriage” (Cleveland Classical). A former management consultant with an MBA from Columbia Business School, Lawson made an unconventional journey to the operatic stage, quickly earning international recognition through major competition successes, including the top prize at the George & Nora London Foundation Competition, First Prize at the Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition, and the Opera Index Arthur E. Walters Memorial Award.

From 2019 to 2025, Lawson was a principal member of the Semperoper Dresden ensemble, where he established himself as a versatile and commanding presence across a broad repertoire. His roles included Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, Leporello and Masetto in Don Giovanni, Donner and Wotan in Das Rheingold, the Steuermann in Tristan und Isolde, and Gunther in Götterdämmerung under the baton of Christian Thielemann. Additional appearances included Orest in Elektra, Colline in La bohème, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Angelotti in Tosca, and the Speaker in Die Zauberflöte. In concert, he performed the demanding roles of Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress and Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten with the Staatskapelle Dresden.

A regular guest at the Bayreuth Festival, Lawson has appeared as the Steuermann in Tristan und Isolde under Semyon Bychkov. Recent highlights include his Deutsche Oper Berlin debut as Klingsor in Parsifal, appearances with Opernhaus Zürich in Christian Spuck’s staged production of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, and role debuts as Alberich in both Götterdämmerung and Das Rheingold. He also made his Munich debut with Nathalie Stutzmann and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Mozart’s Requiem, and returned to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Handel’s Messiah.

Equally acclaimed for his portrayals of Mozart’s great bass-baritone roles, Lawson has sung the title role in Le nozze di Figaro in more than 70 performances and has appeared as Don Giovanni with the Cleveland Opera. His acclaimed interpretations of Nick Bottom in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust, Rocco in Fidelio, Wotan in concert at Carnegie Hall, and Schubert’s Winterreise in recital continue to showcase an artist of exceptional range, intelligence, and dramatic power.
