Lena Sands is an award-winning practitioner and teacher of costume design recognized for her innovative theatrical work. Lena’s past collaborations with director Alexander Gedeon include the New York Times Critic’s Pick Everything Rises (Royce Hall, BAM), Sucktion by Anne LeBaron, and an operetta based on Dostoevsky’s The Double (Boston Court, Pasadena). Designs for new operas also include Four Larks’ Frankenstein (The Wallis, Beverly Hills) and visual album Homeric Hymns (Getty Villa); and Minute to Midnight by Dante De Silva, and Sally Ride by Dana Kaufman (Synchromy, Los Angeles).

Other notable costume designs include Center Theatre Group’s American Idiot revival (Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles), SITI Company’s The Bacchae (BAM, Guthrie, Getty Villa), Pat Benatar’s Invincible—The Musical (The Wallis), and the new musical Menstruation: A Period Piece (Los Angeles LGBT Center). She designs for Los Angeles’s Critical Mass Performance Group including Mariology (Boston Court; Mixed Blood, Minneapolis), Ameryka (Kirk Douglas, Culver City), Untitled Communion (REDCAT, Los Angeles), and After Iphigenia (Getty Villa).

Lena’s work has been featured in Vogue magazine, as worn by Jinkx Monsoon. Her work was also displayed in the exhibition Innovative Costume of the 21st Century: The Next Generation. She holds a BFA from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Website: lenasands.com
