Sydney Baedke, Tzeitel
Canadian soprano Sydney Baedke has been recognized as a “vocal powerhouse” (Schmopera) with an “impressively rich” instrument (London Unattached). Her recent career highlights include a “well-projected, vocally pure, and moving” Countess (Opera News) for Pacific Opera Victoria’s Le nozze di Figaro, Gertrudis in Reznicek’s Till Eulenspiegel (Theater für Niedersachsen), and her Royal Opera House debut as the Female Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia.
A 2025 International Opera Awards Foundation Bursary Recipient, Sydney made her “luxuriously lyric” debut (La Presse) as Liù in Turandot in 2026 (Orchestre Philharmonique et Choeur des Mélomanes) and performed the Countess for Opera Kelowna, and Giulietta in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, which she adds to performances as Antonia (Sante Fe Opera Apprentice Singer Showcase) and Olympia (Aspen Music Festival). On concert stages, she has performed Bruckner’s Te Deum (Calgary Philharmonic), and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Handel’s Messiah with numerous orchestras. She has also appeared at the Rockport Music festival, Carnegie Hall, and the Aldeburgh Festival.
Highlights of her 2027 schedule include Pamina (Edmonton Opera’s Die Zauberflöte), Tzeitel (Detroit Opera’s Fiddler on the Roof), and Rachmaninoff’s The Bells (Orchestre Philharmonique et Choeur des Mélomanes). Named among Canada’s top musicians under 30 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Sydney also makes appearances as Ma Zegner (Mazzoli’s Proving Up), Mimì and Musetta (La bohème), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), and Tatyana (Eugene Onegin).
