New to opera? Join us for what some call the ultimate cultural experience!
Opera brings together awe-inspiring performers, powerful music and theater, and spectacular sets and costumes. We add a unique Detroit spin that prizes innovation and diverse perspectives.
You’ll discover immersive stories that explore relationships, society, and what makes people tick—across centuries and cultures, comedy and drama, realism and fantasy.
There’s nothing you need to know or do for your first opera—come as you are, and you’ll be welcomed with open arms. But just in case, we’ve pulled together answers to some of the questions we hear most often.
Welcome to opera
You’ll see people from all walks of life here, with a wide range of style choices. If you want to make it a special occasion and go glam to match our opulent opera house (and maybe enjoy a photo op), go for it! If you’re more comfortable staying casual, that’s great too—wear what works for you. Opera gives voice to all kinds of personalities both onstage and in the audience—bring your whole self.
Yes! Every performance has supertitles (English translations appearing on screens throughout the theater) so you’ll always know what’s happening. The staging and music also communicate the action, characters, and emotional arc of the story. You can also join us one hour prior to the performance for our Pre-Opera talks to learn more about what you’ll be watching / hearing / experiencing.
Whenever you’re so moved! There will be a curtain call at the end of the performance, but people often applaud after arias (solos) or other impressive moments, and at the end of each act. You can also acknowledge the performers with a hearty “Bravo.”
It varies, anywhere from 90 minutes to around three hours. Check our performance listings [link] for details. Most performances will have intermissions, where you can enjoy a drink or a quick bite.
