Making their Detroit Opera House debut, Complexions Contemporary Ballet has awakened audiences to a new, exciting genre with their singular approach of reinventing dance and contemporary ballet. Led by dance icons Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson with stunning gifted dancers and powerful choreography, Complexions has been hailed as a “matchless American dance company” by the Philadelphia Inquirer and “game changing” by London’s The Guardian.
Featuring live music from the Detroit Opera Orchestra, the first act features Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Helbig, a vocal performance of Ave Maria, plus a spoken word poem by Aaron Dworkin set to the music of Michael Abels. The second act features For Crying Out Loud – using the raw and unfiltered music of U2 from the latest release “Songs of Surrender”, Rhoden brings the vibrancy of the stories told by the music and lyrics into a landscape of expression – drawing on the grit and honesty of these iconic songs stripped down to their acoustic best. The performance is both moving and uplifting, leaving the audience with a sense of hope for what’s to come.
