Detroit Opera is auditioning soprano/mezzo/alto opera and/or musical theatre singers with significant dance and movement experience for the ensemble of The Fountain of Tears (Ainadamar). Applicants should be either classically trained singers or musical theatre trained singers with classical/legit vocal technique.
Applicants should have a high level of musicianship and be comfortable singing in a foreign language (Spanish).
Applicants will be required to present the following:

For the dance/improvisation movement audition, applicants need to wear form fitted attire. There will be a vocal range check and a short musicianship assessment. All auditions will be recorded to be viewed by the creative team.

Position Summary:
Detroit Opera (DO) is southeast Michigan’s premier venue for opera and dance, and is a contemporary cultural-corner stone of the City of Detroit. Located in the heart of downtown, near Comerica Park, Detroit Opera offers a dynamic work environment. DO Crowd Managers work with the Security Team to provide services designed to ensure the safety of Detroit Opera and the Detroit Opera House patrons, visitors, performers during performances and other events. Through working cohesively with the DO Security and Events teams Crowd Managers work to secure the safety of patrons, visitors, and performers by regulating traffic control, maintaining access to entrances and emergency exits, and performing security screenings—when required.
Responsibilities:
- Regulate traffic by managing the movement of activities and guests
- Monitor entrances and exits to ensure proper egress, in accordance

Position Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications (DoMC) is responsible for the successful development and implementation of Detroit Opera’s (DO) marketing, branding, sales, research, and communications efforts. Simultaneously, the DoMC is responsible for developing a cohesive marketing strategy, curating the company’s image, and raising visibility and awareness of DO both locally and nationally to support all institutional goals. The DoMC shares DO’s commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and collaborates with the President & CEO and the Artistic Director to establish a marketing strategy that supports the artistic vision and operating objectives of the Opera Company and its various business units.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Lead initiatives in the development and implementation of innovative marketing, communications, and sales/service strategies to achieve revenue goals, build the DO brand, promote opera and dance offerings, and raise awareness both locally and nationally of DO programs and achievements.
- Develop annual communication strategies and plans for DO and oversee the implementation of all related aspects.
- Develop plans and lead messaging decisions for communicating DO and activities to the media.
- Develop plans and lead messaging decisions for website, social media, and e-communications programs.
- Develop season and single ticket sales goals and revenue projections in collaboration with other senior leaders, and the Senior Manager of Ticketing and Box Office Operations.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related degree, or equivalent education and experience.
- Seven or more years of experience successfully leading marketing and communications functions of a complex organization. Performing arts experience preferred.
- Five years of focused experience in customer or member acquisition and retention.

Position Summary:
Detroit Opera (DO) is southeast Michigan’s premier venue for opera and dance, and is a contemporary cultural-corner stone of the City of Detroit. Located in the heart of downtown, near Comerica Park, Detroit Opera offers a dynamic work environment. DO Event Medics work with the Security Team to provide services designed to ensure the health and safety of Detroit Opera and the Detroit Opera House patrons, visitors, performers during performances and other events. Event Medics work to secure the safety of patrons, visitors, and performers by providing immediate medical care to any and all individuals who fall ill, to be vigilant of individuals displaying signs or symptoms of illness, to call for or facilitate communication with emergency first responders, and provide crowd management services for the safety of patrons, visitors, employees and artists.
Responsibilities:
- Immediately respond to all medical emergencies in accordance with the relevant procedures and policies.
- Observe crowds in order to keep vigilant watch for symptoms and early signs of illness or medical emergencies.
- Treat symptoms of minor injuries, such as small cuts/scrape, dizziness, nausea, headaches, contacting emergency medical services as needed.
- Correspond with the Manager on Duty, Director of Security, and the Manager of Venue Operations to adequately provide emergency medical care within the existing security plan framework.
- Participate in traffic control duties for large events, as needed.

Position Summary:
The Major Gifts Officer position is a key member of the Development Department’s team who will be responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of current and prospective donors. The Major Gifts Officer is an opportunity for a motivated and experienced development professional to impact strategy and growth for Detroit Opera’s Development Department. This position requires both strategic vision and a hands-on approach with knowledge of all facets of development and a good working understanding of nonprofit best practices. The successful candidate will be motivated to network socially and have a call and passion for building relationships with those in decision making positions; is high energy with a positive attitude and the ability to provide superior donor service; and a dynamic self-starter who can think strategically and provide solutions.
This position reports to the Director of Development and works closely with the President & CEO, Artistic Director, and other organizational leaders.
Specific Responsibilities:
- In partnership with board and staff leadership, support strategy of Detroit Opera's annual giving, capital, and other identified campaigns
- Support the CEO, Artistic Director, and Development Committee members in their personal solicitation activity by providing background information and any required materials.
- Develop & manage a portfolio of approximately 100 - 125 qualified major individual gift prospects with the goal of securing investments in the capital campaign and artistic initiatives as well as maintaining and increasing investments in the annual fund
- Key staff manager for the solicitation and stewardship of the DiChiera Society - an annual portfolio of donors that give $2,500+
- Build and facilitate plans to cultivate existing donors and prospects with the goal of opening new opportunities for funding and to deepen existing relationships
- Work closely with volunteer leadership to engage in solicitations and other cultivation/stewardship activities
- Attend meetings of board committees and other relevant working groups and meetings as assigned
- Prepare a yearly Work Plan, aligned with financial targets, as well as professional goals and objectives
- Keep detailed, comprehensive and accurate records of contacts with all prospects and donors
- Participate in all events of the Development department including donor stewardship events, donor lounge shifts, board engagement and other key fundraising events throughout the year.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of development experience with increasing levels of responsibility and achievement in executing a successful fundraising program or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated experience in personal solicitations of gifts $10,000+

- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with an ability to work easily and effectively with volunteers and staff, and sensitive to the needs of individuals and able to maneuver within multiple departments

Position Summary:
Detroit Opera aspires to influence the future of opera with a goal of invigorating new audiences through new and re-imagined productions, relevant to current times. It is creating an ambitious standard for American opera that emphasizes community, accessibility, artistic risk-taking, and collaboration.
The Production Manager is a key member of the production team and serves as the primary liaison for all personnel who work behind-the-scenes (“production personnel”), including but not limited to: designers, stage managers, costume, wardrobe, wig & makeup, and vendors, and providing them with a welcoming and supportive environment. In this role, the incumbent manages the day-to-day production planning for opera, dance, and other institutional events or activities requiring production support. This position reports to the Chief Artistic Production Officer and works collaboratively within the production department and cross-departmentally across the organization. This position supervises the Production Assistant.
Specific Responsibilities:
PRODUCTION
General Production
- Manage inventory of DO-owned equipment and instruments, tracking updates and insurance information using ArtsVision.
- Secure rental of instruments required by program instrumentation as identified by orchestra librarian and/or orchestra personnel.
- Maintain fiscal responsibility in processing and tracking timely payment of vendor invoices; secure estimates and contract vendors based on budgetary limits.
- Prepare production budgets, forecasts, and co-production budget settlements.
- Review technical riders and collect feedback from technical department in order to respond to dance companies, designers, etc. in a timely manner.
- Be familiar with and ensure compliance with IATSE, AFM, and AGMA collective bargaining agreements.
- Take lead responsibility for determining COVID testing needs, schedule, acquisition of tests, working closely with the Artistic Administrator and HR.
- Ensure clear communication and detailed coordination between needs of designers, directorial staff, technical department, costume department, WMU crew, music department, etc.
- Work closely with the technical and costume departments to either develop or redesign a clear system for cataloguing, inventory, and organization of warehouse items.
Production Rentals
- Prepare, update, and maintain comprehensive production materials associated with Detroit Opera-owned productions available for rent.
- Coordinate logistics surrounding shipment & return of production rental materials, working in tandem with the technical and costume departments.
- Prepare rental agreements and serve as primary liaison with the renting opera company.
Hospitality & Servicing
- Ensure hospitality logistics and servicing for all production personnel and contribute to creating a welcoming and supportive environment.
- Produce informational materials for production personnel, including but not limited to: parking, production schedules, venue/company protocols & policies.
- Coordinate the booking of travel, housing accommodations, and ground transportation for visiting production personnel.
Contract Administration
- Responsible for production personnel contract administration, drafting agreements, obtaining signatures, scanning and electronic filing, and tracking of contract status.
- Hire, contract, and supervise production personnel including but not limited to: assistant directors, stage managers, assistant stage managers, supertitle operator, WMU personnel, répé
- Ensure all production personnel have submitted necessary paperwork for employment and distribute to appropriate staff.
- Prepare and file visa applications for visiting foreign production personnel.
- Ensure timely payment of fees and wages due to various production personnel.
SCHEDULING
- Manage and ensure accuracy of production schedules for all opera and dance
- Create and maintain keyboard tuning schedules for all Detroit Opera events; manage contracts, working relationship, communication, and schedule for tuning technician(s).
- Serve as a system administrator for ArtsVision and as primary production department representative for ArtsVision.
- Schedule and prepare agendas and materials and manage cross-departmental production meetings involving artistic, marketing/PR, facilities, events, education-community, dance, etc. to ensure transparency and clarity of information.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in performing arts field, production, technical, or equivalent professional experience
- Three or more years of experience working for a performing arts organization or production experience

Position Summary:
Detroit Opera (DO) is southeast Michigan’s premier venue for opera and dance, and is a contemporary cultural-corner stone of the City of Detroit. Through a meticulous security strategy, Detroit Opera Security Officers provide services designed to ensure the protective security of Detroit Opera staff, patrons, visitors and performers; and the Detroit Opera House buildings and grounds. Incumbents in this position will secure premises, personnel, patrons and guests by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; patrolling and inspecting buildings, equipment, and access points; permitting entry and checking credentials. During performances and other large events with visiting attendees, Security Officers monitor crowds, and provide crowd management services for the safety of visitors, employees and artists.
Responsibilities:
- Patrol and secure the Detroit Opera House.
- Monitor and analyze CCTV camera footage.
- Protect company assets relative to theft, assault, fire and other safety issues; guard valuables in a secure area
- Respond to alarms and emergencies, communicate any irregularities with management
- Keep a thorough incident report record; follow procedures for various initiatives including fire prevention, traffic control and accident investigations

Position Summary:
Detroit Opera’s (DO) website is the organization’s most valuable tool in communicating with its patrons and the general public, serving as a marketing and ticket-selling platform, and serving as a hearth to tell the company’s story. DO’s Website & Social Media Manager position (WSMM) is preeminent creator, steward, and manager of this website, improving the company’s online presence and website functionality, with an understanding of the organization’s complex needs as a producing and presenting opera and dance company, as well as a rental venue, providing the region with a variety of other performances. DO’s WSMM is a savvy website manager with strong information technology and problem-solving skills; an experienced developer, who is able to implement new design and integrate new technology; and an adept colleague with tactful communication skills, who is able to work with multiple departments with competing, various website needs.
Position Responsibilities:
- Maintain and document ownership of company’s internet domains and social media platforms
- Ensure smooth website functionality, both on computer and mobile devices
- Fix and troubleshoot website errors, especially as they relate to ticket sales and Tessitura (TNEW) integration
- With consideration of the customer experience, adapt webpages to align with the purposes and goals of the institution
- Resolve deficiencies uncovered by user and employee feedback and regular testing
- Work with the Marketing Department and other key website stakeholders to implement the company vision for website design and features
- Convert written, graphic, audio and video components to compatible and accessible web formats
- Develop and create new pages
- Adhere to company policies concerning the website and online usage
- Collect data and analyze on website traffic and similar metrics across platforms
- Identify methods to improve search engine optimization (SEO) and website traffic, and work with the Marketing Department to implement these methods
- Keep apprised of new website features, uses, and new technologies of other industries
- Meet with department heads to best understand their staff’s website needs
- Work with various departments who underutilize the platform on new projects, to improve their reach on DO’s website
- Train staff on new website features
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field with three years’ experience as a Website Manager or Web Developer, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Extensive knowledge of website management, analytics, design, and SEO best practices and standards, experience working with WordPress
- Highly proficient with HTML5 and CSS; JS and PHP
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience working with Tessitura and/or comparable ticketing service software
- Demonstrated, strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to understand diverse perspectives and acknowledge the significance of differences and complexities in background, cultures, values and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive environment
Desired Qualifications:
- Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience working or coursework in graphic arts and/or marketing
- Knowledge of or background in opera and/or dance
Essential functions/physical demands:
- The person in this position remains in a stationary position for long periods of time.
- The person in this position occasionally moves throughout the building to access files.
- The person in this position occasionally moves materials weighing up to 30 pounds.

The Wig & Makeup Crew are talented individuals who help transform artists and performers into their characters. Members of the Wig & Makeup Crew work closely with renowned designers to execute their artistic vision.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Apply makeup per artistic direction from the Wig & Makeup Designer
- Apply wigs per artistic direction from the Wig & Makeup Designer
- Maintain positivity and help artists & performers feel confident and comfortable in their appearance
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Possess a positive attitude and calm demeanor.
- Ability to understand diverse perspectives and acknowledge the significance of differences and complexities in background, cultures, values and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
