The Detroit Opera Orchestra performs approximately 4-6 productions per season: a combination of opera, ballet and concerts with an average of 7 services per production. The Detroit Opera Orchestra has a minimum service guarantee of 45 services per season. The Detroit Opera season typically runs from October to December and March to May.

Chorus auditions are held each spring for the following season. Auditions for the 2023-2024 Season are complete.

Position Summary:
Detroit Opera (DO) is southeast Michigan’s premier venue for opera and dance, and is a contemporary cultural-corner stone of the City of Detroit. Located in the heart of downtown, near Comerica Park, Detroit Opera offers a dynamic work environment. DO Crowd Managers work with the Security Team to provide services designed to ensure the safety of Detroit Opera and the Detroit Opera House patrons, visitors, performers during performances and other events. Through working cohesively with the DO Security and Events teams Crowd Managers work to secure the safety of patrons, visitors, and performers by regulating traffic control, maintaining access to entrances and emergency exits, and performing security screenings—when required.
Responsibilities:
- Regulate traffic by managing the movement of activities and guests
- Monitor entrances and exits to ensure proper egress, in accordance
- Observe crowds in order to keep vigilant watch for signs of danger
- Correspond with the Manager on Duty, Director of Security, and the Manager of Venue Operations to adequately provide emergency care within the existing security plan framework.
- Ensure security and safety of patrons, visitors, performers, and staff, through adherence to DO security policies
- Ensure security and safety of the venue, and perform security screening when required
- Interact with guests attending events, provide information and direction in a positive and friendly manner
Required Qualifications:

Position Summary:
Detroit Opera’s (DO) Marketing team is focusing on building audiences and awareness for opera and dance art forms. DO’s Digital and Promotions Coordinator’s (DPC) primary objective will be to support the Marketing and Communications department in their mission to increase the company’s local, regional, and national presence. The DPC will support the department in day-to-day administration through implementation and monitoring of social media & digital marketing campaigns; working with media representatives on advertising buys; and assisting department staff where needed.
Specific Responsibilities:
General Promotions
- Under the guidance of the Director of Marketing and Communications, work with media reps to schedule paid promotions and deploy assets for radio, postcards, print, digital ads, billboards, etc.
- In collaboration with the Digital Media Manager and Storyteller and other team members, contribute to the monthly content calendar, which encompasses social media, email marketing, and other digital content planning.
Social Media
- Working with the Digital Media Manager and Storyteller, assist with social media by creating and uploading content, and respond to audience engagements and queries
- Assist with implementation of social media ad buys.
- Develop and implement methods to increase social media engagement and followers.
- Collect, analyze, and provide data reports on the reach and effectiveness of various social media and other digital campaigns.
Email and Digital Marketing
- Manage all e-mail marketing using Prospect 2, including periodic email newsletters, content and production specific emails, as well as partner marketing.
- Act as point person and work with outsourced digital company on management of Google Ad Grant
- Manage company email signature campaigns
Other
- Assist the Communications and Media Relations Manager in proofing materials and archiving media coverage of DO events.
- Assist other department managers and staff as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field, OR commensurate combination of education and job experience.
- Experience in managing successful advertising or marketing campaigns and/or managing social media platforms.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
- Detail-oriented, with a demonstration of excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to understand diverse perspectives and acknowledge the significance of differences and complexities in background, cultures, values and viewpoints as the foundation for an inclusive environment.

Event Medics work to secure the safety of patrons, visitors, and performers by providing immediate medical care to any and all individuals who fall ill, to be vigilant of individuals displaying signs or symptoms of illness, to call for or facilitate communication with emergency first responders, and provide crowd management services for the safety of patrons, visitors, employees and artists.
Responsibilities:
- Immediately respond to all medical emergencies in accordance with the relevant procedures and policies.
- Observe crowds in order to keep vigilant watch for symptoms and early signs of illness or medical emergencies.
- Treat symptoms of minor injuries, such as small cuts/scrape, dizziness, nausea, headaches, contacting emergency medical services as needed.
- Correspond with the Manager on Duty, Director of Security, and the Manager of Venue Operations to adequately provide emergency medical care within the existing security plan framework.
- Participate in traffic control duties for large events, as needed.

Through a meticulous security strategy, Detroit Opera Security Officers provide services designed to ensure the protective security of Detroit Opera staff, patrons, visitors and performers; and the Detroit Opera House buildings and grounds. Incumbents in this position will secure premises, personnel, patrons and guests by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; patrolling and inspecting buildings, equipment, and access points; permitting entry and checking credentials. During performances and other large events with visiting attendees, Security Officers monitor crowds, and provide crowd management services for the safety of visitors, employees and artists.
Responsibilities:
- Patrol and secure the Detroit Opera House.
- Monitor and analyze CCTV camera footage.
- Protect company assets relative to theft, assault, fire and other safety issues; guard valuables in a secure area
- Respond to alarms and emergencies, communicate any irregularities with management
- Keep a thorough incident report record; follow procedures for various initiatives including fire prevention, traffic control and accident investigations
- Check visitors in and out of the Detroit Opera House, and escort visitors around the premises.

Position Summary:
-Detroit Opera Youth Chorus:
The Detroit Opera Youth Chorus is an ensemble for Metro Detroit youth interested in vocal musical theatrical art. Accepting children by audition ages 8-18, the choir performs as a separate ensemble and in Detroit Opera productions that require a children’s chorus.
The DOYC Preparatory Chorus accepts up to 30 children 8-12 years old and the Principal Chorus accepts up to 50 children 11-18 years old. Children accepted into the DOYC learn the various aspects of opera and voice training, including voice studies, movement, and music theory in a professional environment.
-Detroit Opera Youth Chorus Principal Chorus:
The DOYC Principal Chorus provides a comprehensive program of vocal training and performance protocol to 11-18 years old youth. The chorus rehearses once a week on Mondays from 5:30-8pm and sings a variety of repertoire with and without accompaniment. A portion of the rehearsal is devoted to studying music theory which includes sight reading, terminology, and learning key musical concepts. Choristers explore text and music interpretation and receive exposure to foreign languages through repertoire study. Correct posture, diction, tone placement, and breath management will be taught and developed so that participants can sing accurately with good breath control and resonance throughout the singing ranges. The Principal Chorus participates each season in A Winter Fantasy concert during the fall season, and in the spring, presents its own opera, professionally produced on the Detroit Opera main stage. There are occasional performance opportunities throughout the community.
When the Principal Chorus has additional opportunities of singing on Detroit Opera main stage performances, they are trained by the DO Chorus Master and not DOYC Conductor.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Primary Responsibilities:
- Select repertoire suitable for children’s voices and appropriate for training students in choral singing
- Provide instruction and develop the vocal and ensemble skills of young singers
- Incorporate theory instruction. Currently DOYC uses A Young Singer’s Journey
- Plan and execute weekly rehearsals
- Prepare singers to perform at concerts, DOYC opera, and other performances throughout the season
- Conduct all Principal Chorus performances which may include the annual children’s opera
- Keep current with new choral repertoire and collaborate with DOYC staff on programming
- Assist staff with concert-related logistics as needed
- Communicate regularly and clearly with families of singers regarding musical issues
- Communicate with accompanist regarding rehearsals and concerts
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education; Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance with classroom teaching experience; or Bachelor of Music Degree in Choral Conducting (Master of Music degree in any of the above programs is preferred.)
- Experience and knowledge in working with the young developing child voice
- Excellent conducting skills
- Proficient in piano
- Capable of teaching music theory and solfege
- Experience in opera and theatrical setting
- Passion for working with children and strong belief in and understanding of the benefits of performance-based music education
- Strong knowledge of vocal production and choral technique
- Knowledge of choral techniques, vocal pedagogy and a broad range of age appropriate choral repertoire for children 8-18 years.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- The ability to work as a member of a team
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to do advanced planning
